Aishalton has become the first Indigenous community in Guyana to embrace a new child protection campaign that was recently launched.
According to the South Rupununi District Council (SRDC), the Rights of the Child Commission and the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) launched “SEE. SAY. SAFE.”, a national effort to protect every child in Guyana. The initiative was also introduced at the Wapichan Wiizi Women’s Movement Conference in Aishalton Village, making Aishalton the first Indigenous community in Guyana to embrace this important movement.
Commissioner Nicole Cole, a member of the Women and Gender Equality Commission who also serves on the Rights of the Child Commission, joined participants in the village to share the vision of the programme and to explore the establishment of Village Committees on the Rights of the Child, strengthening community-led protection for our children.
“Too many children who experience harm remain silent, not because they do not want help, but because they fear they will not be believed. Every child deserves to feel safe at home, at school, and within their community. When a child chooses to speak, our first responsibility is to listen with compassion and take their words seriously”, the SRDC said.
