Head of the Customs Anti-Narcotic Unit (CANU), James Singh, revealed yesterday that the threats against him are linked to a suspected Venezuela-based group.
Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of the 9th Asset Recovery Inter-Agency Network of the Caribbean annual meeting at the Marriott Hotel, he said that the agency continues to work with international counterparts because the threats originated outside of Guyana. He explained that based on information received a Venezuelan group known as VIGOD was suspected to be behind the threat.
“Based on information, a VIGOD, it’s a Spanish group we suspect out of Venezuela and so we are working with our counterparts.”
Singh acknowledged the difficulties in communication, particularly with Venezuela, stating that, “Unfortunately, we don’t have the sort of communication we’d want with Venezuela as we have with other countries.”
Despite these challenges, he assured that efforts are being made to share information with regional counterparts in an attempt to uncover the truth or dissuade illicit activities.
In April, a masked gunman issued death threats against Singh. Initially Singh had stated that “A threat against me is a threat against the entire organization. We remain undeterred, and this only underscores the impact we are having on narco-traffickers.”
