A 36-year-old labourer was on Thursday charged with attempting to obstruct the course of justice in connection with the police investigation into a murder by falsely implicating himself.
He was granted $175,000 bail by Magistrate Orinthia Schmidt at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court after his not guilty plea.
According to a statement from the Guyana Police Force, Junior Callender of Hogg Street, Albouystown, was charged with attempting to obstruct the course of justice.
The charge arose from ongoing investigations into the murder of Daintier Vegas Infante, which occurred on May 10 at Forshaw Street, Alberttown.
Police alleged that Callender attempted to obstruct the course of justice by falsely implicating himself in the matter in an effort to take responsibility for a wanted person connected to the murder investigation.
The police said Callender was arrested on June 18 and charged the following day.
He appeared before Schmidt on Thursday, when the charge was read to him. He was not required to plead.
In addition to being placed on $175,000 bail, Callender was ordered to report to the police every Friday at 9 am.
The matter was adjourned until July 3.
