Former presidential guard and Special Branch officer Yogendra Sukhdeo was today sentenced to life imprisonment with the possibility of parole after serving 30 years for the 2023 murder of Amit Singh.
Handing down the sentence at the High Court in Demerara, Justice Sandil Kissoon described the killing as a “heinous and horrendous crime” motivated by greed. The Judge found that Singh was lured into a carefully planned robbery before being brutally beaten to death with a piece of wood, suffering multiple blunt force injuries to his head and neck.
Justice Kissoon highlighted several aggravating factors, including the premeditated nature of the attack, the extreme violence inflicted on the victim, the breach of trust between men whom Sukhdeo had described as being “like brothers” and efforts to dispose of Singh’s phone and conceal the proceeds of the crime.
While the court considered Sukhdeo’s youth, expression of remorse and cooperation with investigators as mitigating factors, Justice Kissoon ruled that they could not outweigh the gravity of the offence.
