Cuban man, 65, dies in accident on bridge access road

Police are investigating a fatal accident that occurred yesterday at about 6.42 am on the Bharrat Jagdeo Demerara River Bridge Access Road, East Bank Demerara, which claimed the life of a 65-year-old Cuban national.

The deceased has been identified as Gerardo Machado Valdivia, of Providence, East Bank Demerara.

The accident involved three vehicles: motor car #PAG 6631, driven by a 22-year-old male of Hague Front, West Coast Demerara; motor car #PAM 2461, driven by a 28-year-old female of Recht-Door-Zee, West Bank Demerara; and motor car #HC 723, driven by a 54-year-old male of Onderneeming, West Bank Demerara.

Preliminary investigations revealed that motor car #PAG 6631 was proceeding west along the southern lane of the southern carriageway when the pedestrian allegedly attempted to cross the road from south to north.

The driver reportedly braked and swerved in an effort to avoid a collision; however, the right front portion of the vehicle struck the pedestrian, who was flung onto the northern carriageway.

As a result of the impact, the driver of #PAG 6631 reportedly lost control of the vehicle, which collided with the concrete median, spun across the roadway, and subsequently struck motor car #PAM 2461 and motor car #HC 723, both of which were travelling east along the northern carriageway.

Emergency Medical Technicians were summoned to the scene. Valdivia was examined by a medical practitioner and pronounced dead at the scene.

His body was later escorted to Memorial Gardens Funeral Home Mortuary, where it awaits a post-mortem examination.

Police said breathalyzer tests were conducted on all drivers involved and no trace of alcohol was detected.

The drivers are currently in police custody assisting with investigations as enquiries continue.
