Minister of Housing Collin Croal on Tuesday met with residents of the new Cummings Lodge Housing Scheme, where he announced plans for a road link to the Aubrey Barker Highway and outlined a number of measures aimed at improving infrastructure and community facilities.
According to the Ministry of Housing, Croal was accompanied by engineers Esan Barry and Kwesi Thompson, surveyor Travis Fields and staff from the ministry’s Community Development and Enforcement and Compliance departments.
The housing scheme comprises more than 450 completed two-bedroom and three-bedroom flat and elevated houses and is served by concrete roads, a police outpost and other infrastructure.
During the meeting, Croal said the ministry intends to improve access to the scheme by upgrading two roads on the eastern and western sides of the development to reinforced concrete, creating a direct link to the Aubrey Barker Highway south of the community.
The project will involve approximately 1,800 metres of roadway, with each road measuring 6.1 metres in width. The ministry said the project is currently at the procurement stage and a contract is expected to be awarded within a month.
“The residents are happy about this, because it means persons will be able to get to and from the East Coast of Demerara and Georgetown very quickly,” Croal was quoted as saying.
The minister also provided an update on the development of the community’s recreational ground, which is being completed in phases. He said the area has already been fenced, while the next phase will include the construction of concrete drains, filling of the ground and installation of an entrance gate.
The completed facility is expected to include lighting, bleachers and a designated children’s play area.
Residents also raised concerns about street lighting, treated water, drainage, electricity, roaming livestock and security. The ministry said these issues will be addressed in collaboration with the Guyana Water Incorporated, the National Drainage and Irrigation Authority, Guyana Power and Light Inc, the Guyana Livestock Development Authority and the Ministry of Home Affairs.
