Dartmouth man dies in suspected electrocution

A 28-year-old Dartmouth Village, Essequibo Coast man died on Monday evening in an incident police say may have involved electrocution, while two children were admitted to hospital for observation.

Dead is Kelton Benn of Ptolemy Avenue, Dartmouth Village.

Police said the incident occurred at about 5:30 pm on Monday. Preliminary investigations revealed that Benn had gone to use an outdoor toilet located at the back of the yard but failed to return.

A relative who went in search of him reportedly found him lying motionless next to a chicken coop.

According to police, investigations revealed that an electrical wire had been connected from the house to the chicken coop several months ago to provide lighting.

Police said a nine-year-old boy and a six-year-old girl were later seen shaking while leaning against the structure. They were taken to the Lima Regional Hospital, where they were admitted for observation.

Benn was also transported to the Lima Regional Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival by a doctor.

His body has been taken to the Lima Regional Hospital Mortuary, where it is awaiting a post-mortem examination.

Police said the Guyana Power and Light Inc. was contacted and the electrical wire was disconnected.

Investigations are continuing.
