The Ministry of Education has called on religious organisations countrywide to offer special prayers for students, teachers and schools as the 2026–2027 academic year begins.
In a memorandum dated August 27, Chief Education Officer Saddam Hussain invited religious leaders to participate in what the ministry described as a “National Call to Prayer” in the days leading up to August 31.
Headteachers, Regional Education Officers and the Principal Education Officer were also sent the memorandum.
“As our children return to the classroom and our teachers prepare to guide and inspire them, we firmly believe that spiritual support strengthens the foundation upon which learning, character and national development are built,” Hussain said.
Religious organisations were asked to include special prayers during worship services and other gatherings for children to be protected, inspired and empowered to learn “with purpose, diligence and joy.”
The ministry also requested prayers for teachers to be given wisdom, patience, strength and renewed commitment as they nurture students.
Prayers were further sought for schools to remain safe, welcoming and nurturing environments in which every student has an opportunity to achieve his or her potential.
“Your leadership, guidance and spiritual influence within our communities are deeply valued,” Hussain told the religious leaders.
“We are confident that your prayers and support will contribute meaningfully to the success and well-being of the students, educators and families whom we collectively serve.”
The memorandum was copied to Education Minister Sonia Parag, the ministry’s Permanent Secretary, the General Secretary of the Guyana Teachers’ Union and ministry staff.
