Eight hurt after boats collide in Canje Creek

Claymont Amsterdam

Eight persons, including a boat captain, were injured yesterday afternoon after two motor boats collided head-on in the Canje Creek, Berbice.

Regional Police Commander, Assistant Commissioner Shivpersaud Bacchus confirmed to Kiskadee Watch that the collision occurred at about 1:15 pm.

According to preliminary reports, one of the vessels, powered by a 40-horsepower Yamaha outboard engine, was captained by 38-year-old Claymont Amsterdam of Baracara Creek. The other vessel was operated by Pascall James and was transporting a Ministry of Health public health team that had just concluded a medical outreach at the Baracara Health Centre and was returning to New Amsterdam.

Reports indicate that Amsterdam’s vessel, which was carrying several children, was travelling in the riverain community when it allegedly collided head-on with the boat transporting the health workers.

The eight injured persons were taken to the New Amsterdam Public Hospital, where they were admitted for treatment.

Amsterdam, described as an experienced boat captain, sustained multiple head injuries and was subsequently transferred to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation for further treatment.

A relative said his condition is critical.

Police are continuing their investigations into the collision.
