GPL removes over 220 illegal connections

Some of the illegal connections

The Guyana Power and Light Inc (GPL)  removed more than 220 illegal electricity connections during a three-day exercise in several communities, the Ministry of Public Utilities and Aviation says.

In a statement, the ministry said GPL’s Loss Reduction Department carried out the operation at Eccles, Diamond Phase Three, Little Diamond and sections of Sophia.

According to the ministry, the electricity consumed through the illegal connections amounted to approximately one megawatt.

The exercise forms part of a countrywide campaign by the ministry and GPL to tackle electricity theft.

The ministry said illegal connections place additional pressure on transformers, feeders and other infrastructure, contributing to overloaded systems, equipment failures and power disruptions.

It warned that the connections also expose residents, GPL employees and emergency responders to the risk of electrocution and electrical fires.

Persons with unauthorised connections were urged to visit GPL to regularise their electricity service.

The utility is expected to continue loss-reduction exercises in other communities as part of efforts to improve the efficiency, reliability and safety of the electricity system.
