The Ministry of Health today commissioned a new $30 million health centre and completed a $30 million staff living quarters at Red Hill, Manawarin, Region Two (Pomeroon-Supenaam).
A release from the Ministry of Health said that the investment will improve access to quality healthcare for approximately 500 residents of Manawarin and surrounding areas, while providing accommodation to support healthcare workers.
During a tour of the newly commissioned facilities, Minister of Health, Dr. Frank Anthony, underscored the Government’s commitment to delivering modern, accessible healthcare services to rural and riverine communities through sustained investments in health infrastructure.
The health centre has been elevated to protect it from flooding during periods of high water due to its proximity to the river.
The new facility features a spacious waiting area and separate male and female washroom facilities to improve convenience and accessibility.
The facility also includes a telemedicine system, which links healthcare workers in Manawarin with doctors and specialists at regional hospitals and the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation. Also equipped with devices to monitor blood pressure, temperature, oxygen saturation and other vital signs, the system enables real-time clinical consultations, enhancing the quality of care available within the community, the release added.
Residents will also benefit from a fully stocked pharmacy that provides essential medications while supporting the management of chronic conditions such as hypertension and diabetes.
The facility also includes a dedicated Maternal and Child Health Room equipped with infant weighing scales and a length board for routine growth monitoring.
There is also a general examination room for general outpatient consultations and clinical assessments, along with an observation bed for individuals requiring short-term monitoring before discharge or referral. Other amenities include a kitchenette for staff and vaccine storage facilities to ensure the continued delivery of immunisation services.
The release said that the Ministry of Health plans to construct a jetty and boathouse at the facility. The health centre will also be equipped with a boat and outboard engine, enabling healthcare workers to conduct home visits and expand outreach services to neighbouring riverine communities.
