Man dies after struck by tree branch at Morwa Backdam

A man died  in an apparent industrial accident at Morwa Backdam, Cuyuni River, yesterday afternoon after he was struck by a tree branch while on an excavator.

Police identified the deceased as Dillon Tobin of Manawarin Village, Moruca, North West District.

According to a police report, the incident occurred at about 2.30 pm while a 47-year-old excavator operator was operating a Doosan 225 excavator with Tobin seated on the machine. During the operation, a tree branch struck Tobin, causing him to fall from the excavator.

The operator immediately rendered assistance, but Tobin subsequently became motionless, the report said.

Police said Tobin’s body remains at the mining camp while ranks are travelling to the scene as investigations into the fatal incident continue.
