Two men were killed in separate road accidents on the West Coast Demerara and in Georgetown between Saturday evening and early yesterday morning, and police have launched investigations into both.
The first accident occurred at about 6.48 pm on Saturday on the De Kinderen Public Road, West Coast Demerara, and claimed the life of 36-year-old Kempton Forrester of De Kinderen Housing Scheme.
According to the police, initial investigations indicate that motor car PSS 3141, driven by a 20-year-old man of Boeraserie, was exiting a supermarket parking lot and entering the public road when it struck Forrester, who was reportedly crossing the roadway from south to north.
Forrester sustained injuries to his head and body and was taken by the driver to the De Kinderen Regional Hospital, where he later succumbed while receiving treatment.
His body has since been taken to the Ezekiel Funeral Home, where it is awaiting a post-mortem examination.
Police said CCTV cameras in the vicinity have been identified and will be reviewed as part of the investigation. A breathalyser test administered to the driver returned readings of six micrograms on both tests.
In the second fatal accident, which occurred at about 3.05 am yesterday at the junction of Camp and New Market streets, Georgetown, 39-year-old Gladwin Dorway of Plaisance, East Coast Demerara, was killed while another motorcyclist was injured.
Police said motor car PNN 832, driven by a 28-year-old woman of South Cummingsburg, was proceeding east along New Market Street when, upon reaching Camp Street, it allegedly failed to stop at the stop sign before entering the intersection.
The vehicle collided with motorcycle CP 7083, which was being ridden by a 27-year-old man of Sparendaam, East Coast Demerara. The impact caused a second motorcycle, CS 441, ridden by Dorway and travelling north along Camp Street, to collide with the right front side of the motor car.
Both motorcyclists were thrown onto the roadway and sustained injuries. They were taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital, where Dorway was pronounced dead on arrival. The other motorcyclist remains hospitalised receiving treatment.
Police said CCTV footage from the area will be examined as part of the investigation. A breathalyser test administered to the driver of the motor car returned readings of 0.25 and 0.21 micrograms. She remains in police custody assisting with investigations.
Investigations into both fatal accidents are continuing.
