The cannabis field

Police on Tuesday destroyed more than $22.8 million worth of cannabis during an eradication exercise at Long Savannah, Canje Creek, Berbice River.

According to a police release, ranks from the Narcotics Branch and Regional Division Six discovered three cannabis farms covering approximately 10½ acres and containing an estimated 53,500 plants ranging from four inches to six feet in height.

The first farm occupied approximately six acres and contained about 30,000 plants. Ranks also found a makeshift camp, a drying area and approximately 20 pounds of dried cannabis.

The second farm, measuring approximately four acres, contained about 20,000 plants. Two makeshift camps and a nursery with an estimated 9,600 seedlings in 75 trays were also discovered.

Approximately 3,500 plants were found on a third farm, which occupied half an acre.

During searches of the area, the ranks also discovered a single-barrel shotgun, four shotgun cartridges and a multicoloured haversack containing three suspected rounds of ammunition—two suspected 9mm rounds and one suspected .32 round.

Police said the plants were uprooted and destroyed along with the camps, drying area and dried cannabis.

The force valued the cannabis at $22,834,696, comprising $13,043,800 in plants, $1,626,240 in nursery plants and $8,164,656 in dried cannabis.
