The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the United Nations Country Team in Georgetown have commissioned a commemorative postal stamp to mark the 60th anniversary of Guyana’s admission to the UN.
Guyana became a member of the United Nations on September 20, 1966, approximately four months after gaining independence.
A release from the ministry yesterday said the stamp features a map of Guyana and the official UN emblem and is intended to signify the country’s longstanding partnership with the organisation.
Over the past six decades, Guyanese representatives have held several senior positions within the UN system, including President of the General Assembly, President of the Security Council and Chair of the United Nations Council for Namibia. Guyanese have also served as judges of the International Court of Justice.
The ministry said Guyana has remained committed to multilateralism and to the purposes and principles of the UN Charter.
It added that the UN and its institutions have supported Guyana’s development and efforts to preserve its sovereignty and territorial integrity, as well as the peaceful settlement of disputes with neighbouring countries.
The government also expressed appreciation for the assistance Guyana has received from the organisation, including through the UN Country Team in Georgetown, and reaffirmed its commitment to continued collaboration.
