A structural engineer is expected to inspect Zeeburg Secondary School tomorrow following concerns about the eastern wing of the West Coast Demerara building, which has been evacuated.

According to the Department of Public Information (DPI), approximately ten classrooms—five on the upper floor and five on the lower floor—have been affected. The classrooms are used by students, including those in Grades Seven and Eight.

Education Minister Sonia Parag visited the school yesterday to assess the situation. Students who normally occupy the eastern wing have been relocated to other sections of the building and are attending classes on a shift system.

Some grades are being accommodated during the morning, while others attend in the afternoon.

“We don’t want our children to be in an unsafe environment. We don’t want our teachers to be in an unsafe environment,” Parag was quoted as saying.

The minister said the engineer would assess the eastern wing and any other areas of concern. The findings will guide the ministry’s decision on the remedial works required.

“Preventative measures have to be taken to ensure that they are always in a safe environment, especially in the school system,” she said.

Parag commended teachers for keeping students engaged and continuing to cover the curriculum despite the temporary arrangements.

The Ministry of Education said it would determine its next course of action after receiving the engineer’s report.
