Suspected raw gold found on US-bound passengers at CJIA

The suspected raw gold seized during screening at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport.

Police and Customs officials are investigating the discovery of 4.157 ounces of suspected raw gold in the belongings of two American citizens departing for New York from the Cheddi Jagan International Airport on Sunday.

According to police, the discoveries were made during separate screening procedures at the Timehri airport on October 25.

At about 9.25 pm, suspected raw gold was found concealed inside a hair-cutting machine in a brown pouch belonging to a 39-year-old American citizen.

Approximately 22 minutes later, another quantity was found concealed in the handbag of a 62-year-old American woman.

Customs officials were contacted, and the metal was weighed in the passengers’ presence. The first quantity weighed 3.048 ounces and the second 1.109 ounces, police said.

Both passengers and the suspected gold were handed over to Customs officials for further investigation.
