A 38-year-old Turkish captain was robbed of his cellular phone and a chain at gunpoint on Lombard Street, Georgetown, shortly after midnight yesterday, police said. A suspect was subsequently arrested and the phone recovered.
Engin Kaymak, of Friendship, East Bank Demerara, was standing on the western pavement near Princes Street at about 12.05 am when two men approached him, one on foot and the other on a black XR motorcycle.
According to police, the motorcyclist dismounted and pointed a handgun at Kaymak before taking his blue Redmi phone. The other man took his chain and fled south along the street.
Kaymak immediately alerted nearby police ranks, whose checks led to the arrest of a 29-year-old unemployed Albouystown man. Police also seized a black XR motorcycle bearing registration number CM 2595.
A search of the suspect uncovered a cellular phone concealed in his pants, which Kaymak identified as his property.
The phone and motorcycle were lodged as evidence, and the suspect was taken into custody at the Brickdam Police Station.
Police said the second suspect had not been located. No shots were fired and no one was injured. Investigations are continuing.
