Two miners reportedly trapped after Region Eight cave-in

The police say they are investigating a mining pit cave-in which occurred yesterday at about 15:23hrs at St. Elizabeth Backdam, Potaro, Region #8, where two miners are reported to be trapped.

In a release today, the police said that the missing men have been identified as Franky Hussain, a 32-year-old pork-knocker of North West District, Region #1 and Neunes Neunes Da Silva, a 38-year-old Brazilian national and pork-knocker from Brazil.

Preliminary enquiries disclosed that the men were working in a mining pit, about 60 feet deep, along with other workers when sections of the eastern and western walls reportedly collapsed.

The other workers were able to escape from the pit; however, Hussain and Da Silva were trapped under the fallen debris, which also covered an excavator.

Efforts are presently being made by the owner of the mining operation and workers to find the men.

Police ranks, along with representatives of the Guyana Geology and Mines Commission, are currently on the ground assisting as investigations continue.
