The police last night announced that one of their corporals has been detained in relation to the hit and run on the East Coast of Demerara that claimed two lives.
Motorcyclist Collis Bristol and pillion rider Akeem Burgess died in the incident on June 28 and since then the police had said little about the case until last night. The hit-and-run is said to have occurred between Clonbrook and Anns Grove on the Railway Embankment.
The police said that acting on information received Asp Massay and Sgt Caleb visited Lot 25 River View Housing Scheme Unity Mahaica East Coast Demerara where they contacted Shareef Mohamed, a corporal stationed at the Annandale Police Outpost, East Coast Demerara.
Mohamed is the registered owner of motor car # PAK 1593 which was seen with damage consistent with a vehicular accident. He was questioned as to how the vehicle sustained the damage and he said that he was involved in an incident on Unity Access Road, Mahaica, East Coast Demerara where he lost control of his vehicle and ended up in a trench on Monday, 29th June at about 21:20 hrs. Based on that information Asp Massay and Sgt Caleb returned to Cove and John.
Acting on additional information received on 2026-07-02, at about 16:15 hrs Asp Massay and Sgt Caleb revisited Corporal Mohamed’s residence where he was invited to Cove and John Police Station and his vehicle was taken to the station where a thorough examination were done on the vehicle by ranks from the Criminal Investigation Department crime scene unit in the presence of Corporal Mohamed. Luminol was applied on the vehicle and several traces of blood were taken as evidence and for DNA sampling. Corporal Mohamed was subsequently placed under arrest.
Reward
The families of the two men had demanded answers over their deaths and had announced a reward for information on the suspected hit and run.
The family of 39-year-old Bristol is continuing to call for justice. In an interview with Kiskadee Watch last evening, Bristol’s mother, Shelly Bristol, recounted what she observed upon arriving at the accident scene. She noted that the motorcycle involved was mostly intact with only the mirror and handlebar bent.
Shelly shared that her son was carrying a bag containing cash, his phone and sunglasses. Upon inspecting the bag, she found that the phone’s screen had no cracks and the sunglasses were unbroken, details she found highly suspicious given the severity of his injuries. She described it as impossible for Collis to have been involved in such a gruesome accident without any damage to his belongings.
“If Collis died by accident, how come the motorbike just dent on the left side alone, the light and the mirror and the handle twist a little and nothing else with the bike. My son had a purse on his side, he always get his side bag and let me tell you, the shades that he had in the bag, the cell phone in the bag, not even a crack, no break, the bag didn’t get a scratch, no nothing. Nothing is wrong with the cellphone and the bag is clean as ever. Everything is intact,” Shelly said.
The grieving mother said she visited the police station yesterday and was told the investigation is ongoing.
The mother recounted her last moments with her son last Saturday evening along with his sister. She said that they would usually sit on the street, “And Odessa, myself and Collis, we sit there and we had a wonderful conversation going on.” She described her son as a peacemaker who had loved to entertain people by dancing and making jokes.
“Collis never ever get problem with nobody, none time at all because he always keeps himself out of people way and trouble.”
Shelly said at the time of the accident Collis was coming home from a ‘fowl fight’ game. She said while she did not like his hobby, he had loved fowl fighting. The mother said she was told that he won two games and for the third game, the participants became angry and the game was cancelled and her son along with Burgess left on the motorcycle for Nabaclis.
Collis was the father of two girls ages 11 and 13. The grandmother said he shared a very close relationship with his daughters and since his death they have been traumatized.
Kiskadee Watch was told that the men were on a motorcycle when they were struck down by a speeding motorcar. The motorcar dragged Bristol’s body a short distance away and then fled the scene. Bristol was pronounced dead at the scene and Burgess was taken to the Enmore Regional Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.
