Woman fined for assault in parking row

Lashazia Adams

A 35-year-old woman was yesterday fined after pleading guilty to assaulting attorney-at-law Christopher Belfield and using abusive language during an altercation on Croal Street, Georgetown.

Lashazia Adams appeared before Magistrate Fabayo Azore at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court where she admitted, with an explanation, to unlawfully assaulting Belfield on Friday, June 19, 2026. She also pleaded guilty to a charge of using abusive language.

In her explanation to the court, Adams said she was driving along Croal Street when she noticed what she believed was an empty parking space. She told the court that Belfield was standing in the space, and she asked him to move, adding that she had already begun turning into the parking spot.

Belfield, however, told the court that he had explained to Adams that he was holding the parking space for someone who was on the way. According to the prosecution, it was after that explanation that the confrontation escalated.

The prosecution further told the court that Belfield was struck by Adams’ vehicle five times during the incident. A medical certificate documenting his injuries was produced in court, and the prosecution urged the magistrate to impose the maximum penalty.

Magistrate Azore questioned the prosecution on the basis for seeking the maximum penalty, noting that Adams had admitted guilt. After considering the matter, the magistrate accepted her guilty pleas.

Adams was fined $10,000 for the abusive language offence and $15,000 for the assault charge. Should she fail to pay either fine, she will serve two weeks’ imprisonment on each offence.

The court also heard that Adams is expected to return to the Brickdam Police Station’s Traffic Department, where she may face additional traffic-related charges arising from the incident.
