Letters To The Editor

Barbershops need to close by 10pm

Dear Editor,

Barbershops are bars and hang-out spots in disguise. These licensed and non-licensed business places are permitted to operate (as they think) after midnight with non-enforcement of the law.

The owners of properties and barbershops are not held responsible for the actions of customers who make loud noise with their vehicles, block driveways and strangers (mostly males)

congregate in quiet peaceful communities.

A few checks at the Brickdam, La Penitence, East Bank police stations revealed the ignorance of the law. One police officer admitted that she did not know what the law stated. According to

the Governing law under the Shops (Consolidation) Act, Chapter 91:04 (as amended by in 2009), barbers should close at midnight.

Editor, this Act should be amended to require barbers and hairdressers to close at 9pm or 10pm. I need not remind the public of the number of accidents, deaths, and the destruction of a

healthy youthful man or woman who drinks alcohol and smoke weed continuously. In the meantime, there’s an urgent need for the promotion of the Law to the public and very urgently among law enforcement officers (begin from the Commissioner’s level). Barbershops need to close by 10pm. Change the Law now!

Yours faithfully,
