Dear Editor,
I would like to add my voice to that of my fellow Guyanese, who are calling for Bishop Juan Edghill to step aside during the period of enquiry into the capsizing of the MV Barima on 18 July 2025. I do not know the history of how Bishop Edghill attained his title, but as a professed Christian, one is called to represent the Christian faith by living a clean, moral life, which mirrors the character of Jesus Christ. Like my sisters and brothers of most religious faiths, which teach the same; it is a lifelong challenge, and we miss the mark daily. This must be especially challenging under these grave circumstances when one has an international spotlight on one’s actions.
However, carrying one of the highest titles of the Christian faith, I urge the bishop to show himself approved as an ambassador of Jesus Christ and defender of that faith. Bishop Juan Edghill is compelled by good conscience and high ranking to do that which is morally upright.[ “Let nothing be done through selfish ambition or conceit, but in lowliness of mind let each esteem others better than himself. Let each of you look out not only for his own interests, but also for the interests of others.” Philippians 2: 3-4.]
Humbly submitted,
Cheryl E. Noel
