Dear Editor,
I have some important questions about the proposed four-lane road for the Essequibo Coast. In a not so recent visit to the Essequibo Coast President Irfaan Ali met with some residents of the Essequibo Coast and he engaged them.
Editor, I am not sure but it seems more like people gravitate to promises before actually receiving what is being promised to them.
Editor, the government does it best when it comes to promises. Don’t get me wrong promises are sometimes good especially when one would be looking forward to having something that he or she was promised and has never had.
Editor, let me get straight to the point. The proposed four-lane road that was promised to Essequibians. My first question is where is this four-lane raod going to take residency on the Coast, since the Essequibo Coast is a one-way thoroughfare. Something else to note too is the Essequibo Coast is thirty-nine miles long.
Secondly, who would be entrusted with this massive project, thirdly, was the initial road to cater for a four lane road and what are the plans afoot to accommodate homes that are in close proximity to the initial main road not forgetting that most if not all of the corridors of the main road are burial grounds. Mr. President what would become of the burial grounds with the idea of creating a four-lane road when initially that main road was constructed to accommodate a two-lane road?
Mr. President in your proposals have you considered encroaching on those people who also live a few feet from the main road? What is this conversation about restructuring the main road that has two lanes to convert same into a four-lane road. How much thought has been given to this considered initiative and don’t tell me a four-lane road is going to be constructed elsewhere and not the main road because I don’t know of anywhere else where a new road could possibly be constructed.
These projects are major and they should be given major and strategic planning with qualified personnel in mind. Essequibians should demand more. Editor, I know and many right thinking Guyanese also know that a project as such is huge and would demand mature planning. We need qualified people to do the job because at the end of the day we should be careful and not carefree with our spending. Mr. President remember with the construction of a new and durable road Guyana is going to be moving a step further. Put a great deal of holistic thought when considering reversing a two-lane road into a four-lane road. It is much more technical than just a promise.
Yours truly,
Yannason Duncan
