ear Editor,
The longer the delay and the more extensive the charade, our people will raise new questions concerning the Mahdia tragedy. Numerous warning signs, inspector reports ignored by officials, an account of the concerns lying on a minister’s desk, a completed CoI, and no official charged with criminal negligence or manslaughter. Only a minister transferred to a new post for what many see as a move to help remove the shame of incompetence and mismanagement while a teenager bears the brunt of the punishment. This all seems far too familiar, and the inaction seen today with yet another major tragedy leaves the public extremely skeptical that justice will be served.
The opposition has been sidelined in the process, and honest public servants are being tarnished due to their association with those who have gained a reputation for dishonest business dealings. The public outcry for justice increases and those in a position to appease the calls for justice continue with business as usual as though nothing wrong has happened or is happening within their party. We need those who want to make an honest living in government to retake the helm of leadership.
When it becomes easy to do wrong without fear of consequences many bad things happen across the land. The weak and the poor suffer, and those who were supposed to protect the poor become their enemies and oppressors. We must return to the party of Dr. Jagan. We must return to the purpose laid out by the good doctor. Those that are committed to his purpose must speak up and not let the those who seek only wealth for themselves destroy a party that was built upon good morals, good principles, and good values. It is time for us to shift back to what had made the party of the workers great. We must put the wellbeing of our people and our nation at the forefront of our efforts and actions. We must value the lives of our citizens above all other considerations.
The Chinese ambassador said it well when she spoke of the Communist Party of China (CPC). She said, “The CPC fights corruption with a zero-tolerance attitude. The CPC stresses that Party discipline is no small matter. Party members and officials must not only set an example in obeying national laws. They must also strictly follow Party discipline”. Whether we are communist, socialist, or capitalist, we must fight corruption and ensure that all officials obey the law. The practice of avoiding holding those within the party or political class who break the law accountable must come to an end. If accountability remains lacking lawlessness, violence, corruption, and tragedy will become more prevalent across the land. The PPP needs new leadership. Guyana needs new leadership.
Sincerely,
Mr. Jamil Changlee
