CPL names Hall of Fame player trophy after Sir Garry Sobers

The trophy awarded annually to the player inducted into the Republic Bank Caribbean Premier League (CPL) Hall of Fame will be named the Sir Garry Sobers Award. (CPL)

The trophy awarded annually to the player inducted into the Republic Bank Caribbean Premier League (CPL) Hall of Fame will be named the Sir Garry Sobers Award, the league announced yesterday.

The award honours the legendary Barbadian, widely regarded as the greatest all-rounder produced by West Indies cricket. CPL secured the support of the Sobers family to attach his name to the trophy presented to each year’s player inductee.

The Sir Garry Sobers Award will be presented for the first time during the CPL Hall of Fame Gala Dinner on Tuesday, September 15, 2026, at the Hilton Barbados.

Dwayne Bravo and Ian Bishop have already been confirmed as the inaugural inductees into the CPL Hall of Fame. The initiative will recognise two people annually: a player and an off-field contributor.

CPL Chief Executive Officer Pete Russell said Sir Garry’s name adds considerable prestige to the award and the newly established Hall of Fame.

“Sir Garry Sobers was, without question, the greatest all-rounder the game has ever seen, and having his name on this award means a great deal to everyone at CPL,” Russell said.

He also expressed gratitude to the Sobers family for allowing the league to honour Sir Garry’s legacy, noting that future recipients would carry the award with pride.

The gala dinner will support the Sir Clive Lloyd Healthcare Foundation’s prostate cancer awareness, testing and early-detection efforts across the Caribbean.

Russell said staging the first presentation at an event supporting Sir Clive’s foundation would make September 15 an even more prestigious occasion for West Indies cricket.

With the award bearing Sir Garry’s name and the gala supporting Sir Clive’s regional healthcare initiative, the event will unite the legacies of two of West Indies cricket’s most respected figures.
