Third Keep Fit race set to shake up close overall standings

Alex Mendes heads the standings with 12 points

The battle for the Alex Mendes and Kaieteur Attack Racing Cycling Club Keep Fit Series title will intensify on Sunday, September 6, when the third race is contested at the inner circuit of the National Park.

Racing will begin at 10:00h, with competitors facing 36 laps in an open event for all categories. The meet offers another opportunity for cyclists to collect points and strengthen their challenge for one of the three overall prizes.

Only two points separate the leading three riders after the first two races. Alex Mendes heads the standings with 12 points, followed by opening-race winner Aaron Newton on 11 and second-meet champion Robin Persaud on 10.

Mendes has not yet won a race in the series, but his consistency has carried him to the top. He collected seven points for finishing second in the opening 30-lap contest before adding five with a third-place finish in the second meet.

Newton earned the maximum 10 points after winning the first race in 1:09:22. He later finished sixth in the second event to move to 11 points. Persaud entered the title battle by winning the 36-lap second race in 1:16:00 and securing 10 points.

Segun Hubbard is fourth with seven points after finishing second in Race Two, while Christopher Griffith is fifth on five following his third-place result in the opener.

Andre Greene and Paul Choo-wee-nam have three points each, while Geron William and Jaikarran Sukhai are on two apiece. Julio Meville currently has one point.

The first race saw Newton finish ahead of Mendes, Griffith, Choo-wee-nam, Sukhai and Meville. Persaud led Hubbard, Mendes, Greene, William and Newton across the line in the second contest.

Sunday’s top six finishers will earn points, with 10 going to the winner, seven to second, five to third, three to fourth, two to fifth and one to sixth.

The series runs from July through September, with special prizes awaiting the top three cyclists in the final overall standings.
