26/27 Elite League Playoffs: Penalty drama sends Potaro through as Timehri grind out playoff win

Potaro Strikers (in yellow) survived a dramatic opening match to defeat Paradise Invaders FC 4-3 on penalties after the teams battled to a 2-2 draw in regulation time.

The road to the 2026/2027 Guyana Football Federation Elite League began with tension, late goals and a penalty shootout on Saturday night, as Potaro Strikers FC and Timehri United FC moved one step closer to top-flight football.

Playing at the GFF National Training Centre at Providence, Potaro Strikers survived a dramatic opening match to defeat Paradise Invaders FC 4-3 on penalties after the teams battled to a 2-2 draw in regulation time. Timehri United then followed with a narrow 1-0 win over Mahaica Determinators FC in the second match of the evening.

Timehri United (in yellow) had a hard-fought 1-0 win over Mahaica Determinators on Saturday night at the NTC, Providence.

The double-header opened the Elite League Qualification Playoffs before a small crowd, but the action quickly made up for the modest turnout.

Paradise Invaders struck first in the opening contest, with Titus Webster scoring in the 27th minute to give his side a 1-0 lead at halftime. Potaro, however, found a response after the break through Joshua James, who brought them level in the 70th minute.

The match appeared to swing back in Paradise’s favour when Javell Fraser scored in the 83rd minute, but that advantage lasted only briefly. Cobi-Rhy Jones answered almost immediately for Potaro in the 84th minute, forcing the contest into a penalty shootout after the 2-2 deadlock remained at full-time.

From the spot, Potaro held their nerve better, winning 4-3 to secure passage to the next round.

The second fixture was less dramatic on the scoreboard but just as important for Timehri United, who did enough to get past Mahaica Determinators.

Keyron Williams supplied the decisive goal in the 56th minute, and Timehri protected that advantage for the remainder of the match to seal a 1-0 victory.

The playoffs continued on Sunday evening, with West Demerara’s Beavers FC scheduled to face Essequibo’s Queenstown United. The winner of that match will move on to face Timehri United.

Potaro Strikers, meanwhile, will next meet Georgetown’s Camptown FC, who received a bye into the second round.

Both semifinal matches are set for Wednesday at the NTC, with the winners advancing to the playoff final on Sunday, June 21, at the same venue.

The stakes remain high throughout the tournament. The playoff champion will earn direct entry into the 2026/2027 GFF Elite League, while the runner-up will still have another route to promotion through a playoff against Fruta Conquerors for the remaining place in Guyana’s top division.
