GBI renews backing for schools football league

Guyana Beverages Inc. (GBI), in association with Busta, has renewed its support for the Petra Organisation’s Republic Bank School Football League, which kicks off on Sunday, October 18, at the Ministry of Education Ground on Carifesta Avenue.

The sponsorship was announced during a presentation ceremony at the company’s conference room at Great Diamond, East Bank Demerara, ahead of the tournament’s seventh edition.

GBI Brand Manager Fharis Mohamed said the partnership would give secondary school footballers an opportunity to showcase their ability and potentially advance to regional competition through December’s KFC International Goodwill Tournament.

He described the company’s involvement as an investment in young people and expressed interest in continuing its support for the initiative.

Eight schools will contest the league in a single round-robin format, with matches scheduled for Sundays until November 29. They are Chase Academic Foundation, Santa Rosa Secondary, Three Miles Secondary, New Amsterdam Secondary, Annandale Secondary, Charlestown Secondary, West Ruimveldt Secondary and St Joseph High School.

The teams will compete for the league title and a place in the International Goodwill Tournament.

Petra representative Troy Peters welcomed the renewed sponsorship and thanked GBI’s management and staff for maintaining their longstanding partnership with the organisation.

Peters said the company’s continued involvement reflected its support for sports development in Guyana. He also highlighted GBI’s investment in an advertising billboard at the Ministry of Education Ground, where the league will be played.

Meanwhile, GBI Operations Manager Ryan Gordon said the sponsorship formed part of the company’s efforts to give back to the communities and customers who support its brands.

Reflecting on GBI’s more than 29 years of operations in Guyana and its Caribbean heritage, Gordon said the partnership offered another way to create opportunities for young people.

The seven-week competition will provide regular matches for the participating schools and a platform for emerging football talent.
