The Guyana Football Federation today announced Marco Bonofiglio as the new head coach of the Golden Jaguars senior men’s national team and the Junior Golden Jaguars Under-20 side.
Bonofiglio succeeds Thomas Dooley, who vacated the position earlier this year to join Bangladesh’s national football programme.
The new coach takes charge as Guyana prepares for the 2026 Concacaf Nations League and continues the next phase of the federation’s long-term development plans for the men’s national programme.
Bonofiglio will oversee the technical direction of both teams and prepare them for international competition. His duties will also include strengthening technical standards, assessing the coaching and support staff, recruiting additional personnel and expanding the national player pool.
The federation said he will be responsible for introducing a clear football philosophy across the men’s programme while helping to create a more professional and sustainable national-team environment.
Bonofiglio is already familiar with Guyanese football, having previously served as assistant coach of the senior Golden Jaguars and the Under-20 national team.
He also enjoyed a successful spell as head coach of Guyana’s Under-17 men’s team, guiding the country to its highest-ever finish at the Concacaf Under-17 Championship.
Bonofiglio said his objective is to develop a team that represents the pride, resilience and ambition of Guyana.
“I want a team that is disciplined, aggressive, hungry for success, tactically intelligent and fully committed to competing at the highest level every time it steps onto the field,” he said.
At club level, Bonofiglio led Inter Toronto FC to the 2024 League1 Ontario Championship. His experience also includes technical appointments with Vigor Senigallia in Italy and coaching mentorships with Vis Pesaro and the Italy Under-19 national team staff.
He holds Concacaf National A, B and C Diplomas and is pursuing the Concacaf Pro Diploma. He has also completed Levels One and Two of the Juventus Coaching Clinic.
GFF President Wayne Forde said Bonofiglio’s familiarity with the local football environment, players and culture made him well suited to lead the programme.
Forde said the appointment was not only aimed at preparing the national teams for competition, but also at improving player development, strengthening technical capacity and helping Guyana compete consistently at the highest levels of Concacaf.
