Ten-man GDF snatch stoppage-time win as champions Slingerz crush Camptown

Colin Nelson converted a stoppage-time penalty to hand 10-man Guyana Defence Force FC a dramatic 1-0 victory over Western Tigers in Sunday night’s GFF Elite League Season Eight double-header at the National Training Centre, Providence. The decisive goal came in the 90th minute plus four after GDF had been reduced to 10 players by the dismissal of Emmanuel Lewis in the 65th minute. Western Tigers had an opportunity to take control of the match following the red card, but they could not find a way through the GDF defence. The Army side remained organised and was rewarded with a late penalty, which Nelson converted to settle the contest. Earlier, defending champions Slingerz Football Club delivered a strong attacking performance to defeat Camptown FC 4-0. Camptown, one of the fresh faces in the Elite League this season, kept the champions scoreless for most of the first half. However, Curtez Kellman broke the deadlock in the 38th minute to give Slingerz a 1-0 advantage at the break. Slingerz took firm control during the latter stages of the second half. Yusifu Kargbo doubled the lead in the 72nd minute before Bryan Wharton struck twice. Wharton scored his first goal in the 83rd minute and completed his double three minutes later, sealing a comfortable victory for the defending champions. The two results brought Sunday night’s double-header to a close, with the Elite League scheduled to continue next weekend.
