Kelvin Johnson passes away, remembered for guiding young athletes

Guyana’s 10,000M record holder Kelvin Johnson has died.

Only two days before his sudden death on October 28, former national distance runner Kelvin Johnson was helping young BMX riders take part in competition, an example of the commitment to youth sport highlighted in tributes to Guyana’s 10,000 metres record holder.

Johnson took the riders to an event organised by the Kaieteur Attack Cycling Club, according to the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport, which joined the country’s athletics and cycling bodies in mourning his passing.

His involvement reflected a sporting life that continued beyond his own running career. A member of the Trendsetters Sports Club and an active cyclist, Johnson also coached young people, particularly in Sophia.

The ministry said his love for sport and young people remained strong after he stopped competing as a runner. It recognised his contribution as a coach, alongside the dedication he showed while representing Guyana on the track and road.

Johnson’s competitive achievements included the national 10,000m record of 31 minutes, 14.14 seconds, which he set in 2013.

The Athletics Association of Guyana (AAG) highlighted that performance in its tribute, describing it as evidence of his exceptional talent and dedication.

A distance runner who represented Guyana throughout the Caribbean and beyond, Johnson was remembered by the association for his endurance, perseverance and sporting excellence. The AAG offered condolences to his family, friends and the wider athletics community.

The Guyana Cycling Federation (GCF) also paid tribute to his contribution across athletics and cycling, saying his determination and passion had left a lasting impression on those who knew him and shared in his sporting journey.

The federation extended sympathy to his family, friends, teammates and the Trendsetters Sports Club, expressing hope that they would find strength and comfort as they mourned.

The ministry likewise offered condolences to his family, relatives and friends, recognising both his national sporting achievements and the opportunities he helped create for young athletes.
