Trinidad teenaged home invader died from bullet to back

Javon Hamilton

(Trinidad Express) A post-mortem examination has found that 18-year-old Javon Hamilton, who was killed during a home invasion in Freeport last week, died from a gunshot injury to his right upper back.

His mother, Vicky Daniel, told the Express yesterday that this was the result of the post-mortem examination done on Thursday at the Forensic Science Centre in Federation Park.

Daniel said the forensic findings still left her with unanswered questions about the circumstances surrounding her son’s death.

“There are so many different conflicting stories and versions of what might have happened. I do not know if the bullet entered his back or remained inside of him. I still have a lot of unanswered questions,” she said during a telephone interview.

The family is making arrangements for Javon’s funeral next week.

“I am going to speak to the pastor to start arranging for the funeral. We are also awaiting the arrival of relatives from abroad,” Daniel said.

Her comments followed an appeal by Javon’s father, Victor Hamilton, for police to establish what happened during the September 24 incident at McLeod Trace and find the others involved.

Speaking to the Express on Wednesday, Hamilton said rumours surrounding the shooting were adding to the family’s grief.

“I want the truth. I am hurting and want to know what exactly happened that night. There are plenty of rumours circulating about the incident. I cannot live with the rumours. But I would like the police to investigate and solve that case, the incident when my son died. I want there to be justice,” he said.

Contacted yesterday, a senior police officer attached to the Central Division confirmed that an investigation of the fatal incident was already under way.

Stating that the police were aware of the findings of the post-mortem, the senior officer said once a firearm is discharged, an investigation is inevitable.

A police report on the incident which occurred last week Thursday, stated that four masked intruders entered the Freeport home around 6.50 p.m. A prison officer who lived there heard a commotion and armed himself with his service pistol.

The officer told police that one of the intruders pointed what appeared to be a firearm at him. He fired three rounds, fatally striking one intruder, while the other three fled.

Commenting following the death of his son, Hamilton said Javon had not previously shown signs of criminal behaviour. He worked at a catering company and had recently retaken his Mathematics and English Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate examinations.
