Country music star Dolly Parton has passed away at age 80, Reuters reported today.
Her family announced the news in a video on social media.
In the months leading up to her death, Parton said that she was dealing with health concerns, canceling her Las Vegas residency in May.
A Grammy-Award winning singer, Reuters said that Parton often stood as a symbol of the working-class American and regularly put her name and money behind causes she believed in.
Parton died on Tuesday at the age of 80, her family said in a statement.
Her nephew and head of security, Bryan Seaver, made the announcement in a video posted online.
“This video announcement is something Dolly asked of me years ago, before I fully absorbed it as a future reality,” he said.
“My family and I have shared a lifetime of beautiful memories with Dolly, but so have you. She has always been on your television, your record player, your CD, and on your phone playlist, becoming an extended part of your family whether you liked it or not.”
He said that Parton told him she wanted to “rest in a beautiful bed of plush cotton.”
“Because after a life wearing heavy rhinestones, she finally deserves to be comfortable and have some rest,” he continued, according to Reuters.
