Man dies in Newton, Kitty fire, two houses destroyed

One of the destroyed homes

One person died and two houses were destroyed in a fire at Lot 89 Lamaha Street, Newtown, Kitty last night, the Guyana Fire Service has reported.

The man was later identified as Vernon Duncan Jr.

In a statement on its Facebook page the fire service said that firefighters from the Campbellville, Central and Eccles fire stations responded to the blaze and found three houses engulfed in flames. The fire occurred around 9 pm.

The fire was eventually contained, preventing it from spreading to other buildings. However, two of the houses were completely destroyed, while the third was partially damaged.

During the operation, firefighters were informed that an occupant was unaccounted for. A search of the premises after the blaze was extinguished led to the discovery of the person’s charred remains.

The Fire Service extended condolences to Duncan’s relatives and said an investigation is underway to determine the cause and circumstances of the fire.
