CAC Games 2026: Guyana women finish sixth in 3×3 basketball as Rawlins and Cornette exit 100m

Guyana’s women finished sixth in the 3x3 basketball competition at the 2026 Central American and Caribbean Games in Santo Domingo yesterday.

Guyana’s women finished sixth in the 3×3 basketball competition at the 2026 Central American and Caribbean Games in Santo Domingo yesterday after defeating Guatemala 15-11 before suffering a 15-7 loss to Cuba in the fifth-place playoff.

Meanwhile, Guyanese sprinters Tonya Rawlins and Juvonna Cornette were eliminated from the women’s 100 metres after finishing outside the qualifying positions in their respective semifinal heats at the Félix Sánchez Olympic Stadium.

Guyana began the basketball classification round with a strong performance against Guatemala at the Sports Malecón Park. Ruth Adams opened the scoring just seven seconds into the contest as the Guyanese controlled the game from start to finish.

De Angelique Waithe led the way with a game-high seven points, shooting six-of-13 from the field and converting Guyana’s only two-point basket. Adams contributed four points, while Anaya Clemons scored with one minute and 18 seconds remaining to secure the 15-11 victory.

Guyana held the lead for nine minutes and 53 seconds of the 10-minute contest and built an 8-2 advantage during the opening half of the game.

The result advanced Guyana to the fifth-place playoff against Cuba later in the day.

Guyana again started positively, with Adams scoring the opening basket before the team moved ahead 2-0. However, Cuba responded and gradually took control after tying the game at 2-2.

Guyana called a timeout while trailing 8-4, but Cuba continued to extend its advantage. Waithe was again Guyana’s leading scorer with five points, including the team’s only successful two-point attempt.

Her two-pointer with just over two minutes remaining reduced Cuba’s lead to 12-7, but the Cubans scored the final three points to seal the 15-7 win and fifth place.

Guyana struggled with its shooting against Cuba, converting six of 33 field-goal attempts.

On the athletics track, Rawlins finished seventh in the first women’s 100m semifinal, clocking 12.55 seconds while running into a headwind of 1.4 metres per second.

Cornette competed in the third semifinal after being moved from Heat Two. She crossed the line in 12.01 seconds under a 1.1 metres-per-second headwind and also failed to advance.

The first two finishers in each semifinal, along with the next two fastest athletes across the three heats, qualified for the final.
