Suspected ganja farm found at Bartica Village

Police on Thursday destroyed approximately 5,000 suspected cannabis plants during an eradication exercise at Bartica Village, Upper Berbice River.

The exercise, which was led by a gazetted officer, was conducted between 6 am and 12.30 pm.

According to police, ranks discovered a field measuring approximately two acres and containing suspected cannabis plants ranging from three to six inches in height.

A makeshift camp, measuring about 10 feet by 10 feet, was also found. A search of the camp unearthed a 12-gauge shotgun and six matching cartridges.

The plants were uprooted and destroyed, while the camp was set on fire. The firearm and ammunition were taken to the Central Police Station, where they were lodged.

No arrest was made. Investigations are continuing.
