Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs) attached to the Guyana Fire Service have delivered nine babies so far this year while transporting expectant mothers to hospital.
The Fire Service yesterday said that the babies comprised seven girls and two boys. Seven of the deliveries occurred in ‘A’ Division and the other two in ‘C’ Division.
According to the statement, the babies were delivered by trained Emergency Medical Services personnel after the mothers went into advanced labour while being transported by ambulance.
The Fire Service said the deliveries underscored the role of its EMTs, whose duties include providing critical pre-hospital care and emergency medical intervention, in addition to transporting patients.
It commended the technicians for their professionalism and preparedness, noting that emergency childbirth requires them to remain calm and apply their training to safeguard both mother and baby.
The service added that it would continue training and developing its EMT personnel to ensure they are prepared to respond to a wide range of medical emergencies.
