The Guyana Police Force has launched an investigation into the suspected discharge of a  firearm near the Office of the President in Georgetown last night night, after a suspected bullet was found near a government vehicle.

The incident reportedly occurred at about 9:15 p.m. According to preliminary investigations, a police rank who was on duty at the location reported hearing what sounded like a gunshot coming from the direction of the Square of the Revolution.

Following the reported sound, checks were conducted within the compound and during those checks, police discovered what appeared to be an impact mark on the windscreen of a motor bus attached to the Office of the President.

The bus was parked on the northeastern side of the compound and was facing south when the incident occurred. Police said the windscreen had an indentation with surrounding cracks, prompting further examination of the area and the vehicle.

A suspected 9mm warhead was subsequently found on the ground in front of the motor bus. The item has been lodged by police and is expected to undergo examination as investigators work to determine whether it was discharged from a firearm during the incident.

As part of the investigation, police are reviewing CCTV footage from the area in an effort to establish what occurred and identify any person who may have been involved.

Several persons have also been questioned as investigators seek to gather information about the incident and determine the circumstances under which the  projectile came to be lodged near the government vehicle.
