Over 20 Port Mourant Secondary students treated after bee attack

More than 20 students of the Port Mourant Secondary School were taken to the Port Mourant Public Hospital yesterday after they were attacked by a swarm of bees in the school compound.

The incident occurred around midday while students were playing on a field behind the school during their lunch break.

Deoraj Arjune, whose 13-year-old daughter was among those stung, told Kiskadee Watch that he received a telephone call informing him that she had been taken to hospital.

Arjune said he immediately travelled to the facility, where he confirmed that his daughter had been stung. The affected students were transported to the hospital by teachers, he added.

According to Arjune, he was told that the children were attacked near a large bee nest on the playground. His two sons, who also attend the school, were not affected.

Arjune said he saw more than 20 students receiving treatment at the hospital and called for urgent action to remove the nest.

“They should really look into that bee situation because the children go to play on the playground and the nest is right there. They say it is a big nest,” he said.

Region Six Regional Education Officer Satesh Udit confirmed that the students received medical attention and were subsequently sent home.

Udit said a beekeeper was contacted and visited the school to remove the bees from the playground. He added that classes would continue as usual.

Police and Ministry of Education officials were said to be monitoring the situation.
