The marijuana plants

Police on Thursday destroyed approximately 53,000 cannabis plants and ten pounds of dried marijuana during an eradication exercise at Yaruni Bend, Linden.

In a statement, the police said ranks led by a gazetted officer conducted the operation in the Upper Demerara River area between 5.30 am and 4.36 pm.

Two cannabis farms covering a combined eight acres were discovered. The plants ranged from two to six feet in height.

Ranks also found two makeshift camps and two drying areas containing a total of ten pounds of dried cannabis.

The plants, dried cannabis, camps and drying areas were destroyed by fire. Police estimated the value of the narcotics at $22,038,728.
