Opposition Leader Azruddin Mohamed said yesterday that two vehicles and a boat belonging to him remain in the custody of authorities, with no resolution yet on when they will be returned.
Today marks 10 days since the two vehicles he was travelling with through Leonora were taken into custody and parked at the Leonora Police Station compound. One of the vehicles, registration PAB 4000, was being held over a discrepancy involving its engine number.
Speaking with Kiskadee Watch, he explained that Commander Khali Pareshram told him that one digit in the engine number did not correspond with the number recorded on the vehicle’s registration documents and that he would have to contact the Guyana Revenue Authority (GRA) to determine whether the discrepancy was the result of a clerical error.
Mohamed is saying though that if the discrepancy is indeed a clerical error, it would be a matter for the GRA to correct rather than something for which he should be held responsible.
He said repeated attempts to get an update from the commander have so far resulted in assurances that the matter would be addressed. “Every day we are calling the commander; it’s today, tomorrow, today, tomorrow,” he shared.
He noted that the vehicles are important to his political activities and said he subsequently contacted a senior official at the GRA about the matter. The official indicated that the discrepancy should be a “simple fix” and said the GRA was not aware of the issue and would contact the commander to determine what was happening.
Mohamed also raised concerns over the continued detention of a boat, saying he has not been contacted by authorities about whether any documents are required from him to facilitate its release.
Describing the continued detention of his property as harassment, Mohamed said he believes he is being subjected to politically motivated pressure. “This is real harassment…this is full blown dictatorship I’m living under,” he expressed.
Attempts by Kiskadee Watch to get a response from Pareshram proved futile.
