The Ministry of Public Works yesterday announced that the tarmac for the new Soesdyke-Timehri junction roundabout has been completed, while several other aspects of the project remain outstanding.
The roundabout is intended to link the rehabilitated Soesdyke-Linden Highway with the Good Success-to-Timehri road project and improve traffic flow at the busy junction, which is used by motorists travelling to and from the Cheddi Jagan International Airport.
According to the ministry, several illegal water connections were uncovered within the project boundary during excavation.
The Guyana Water Incorporated was subsequently engaged and installed a new four-inch distribution main along the southern side of the road. The ministry said this allowed the connections to be addressed without unnecessarily disrupting legitimate customers.
Work is now expected to move to the next phase, which includes relocating the police outpost, completing public washroom facilities, applying pavement markings and installing streetlights.
The minister had previously announced that physical works on the roundabout were scheduled to begin on September 9. Vendors operating at the junction were given a final two-week notice in August to relocate to facilitate the project.
The ministry advised motorists travelling through the construction zone to exercise caution and obey the posted signs.
