Newborn  found dead in garbage receptacle at Orange Walk

A newborn baby was found dead in a garbage receptacle at a waste disposal site at Orange Walk, Bourda, yesterday afternoon, prompting a police investigation.

Kiskadee Watch was told that the discovery was made after a vagrant went through one of the garbage bins and raised an alarm, prompting sanitation workers to investigate.

City Council worker Ackeem Austin, who was at the site at the time, said the vagrant called the workers over after making the discovery.

“A junkie come at the said time to tumble the bin because them junkie does come and tumble the bin fuh check the bin and see what them could find. So, the man come and said watch, watch, y’all come see what deh in this bin here. Who bring this bin here. So, when the man come and tell we, we come and check it and we see a baby in the bin,” Austin said.

A source told Kiskadee Watch that the baby was found with ice on its body, giving the appearance that it may have been kept in a freezer before being discarded. It was not immediately clear how long the baby had been dead or whether the ice was connected to the circumstances surrounding its death.

The garbage collected at the site is subsequently transported to the Haags Bosch Landfill Facility.

Crime scene investigators were called to the location and are currently conducting investigations into the circumstances surrounding the baby’s death and disposal.
