Guyana’s cyclists will face a demanding journey along the East Coast of Demerara when the 24th Annual Victor Macedo Memorial Cycle Road Race is staged on Sunday, September 20.
Organised by the Flying Stars Cycle Club, the race will feature two groups travelling to separate turning points before returning to finish at Liliendaal, opposite the Liliendaal Hospital.
The cyclists will roll off from Macedo’s residence on Peter Rose Street, Queenstown, at 7:00am. They will proceed through Lance Gibbs Street and Irving Street, pass the Kitty Roundabout and enter Clive Lloyd Drive, where the race will officially get underway.
From there, the competitors will head east along the East Coast Public Road. Group One will travel along the Mahaicony New Road to Belladrum Village before making a U-turn, while Group Two will turn at Perseverance, popularly known as “The Big Tree”.
The return route will take the riders along the Mahaicony Old Road and Drill Public Road before they reconnect with the East Coast Public Road and continue towards the finish at Liliendaal.
The race returns one year after Jamaul John produced a strong performance to win the 23rd edition. Robin Persaud placed second, followed by Curtis Dey, Paul DeNobrega and Alexander Leung.
John’s victory added another chapter to an event that has remained a recognised part of Guyana’s cycling calendar for more than two decades.
The competition is staged in memory of the late Victor Macedo, who was recognised within the local cycling fraternity as a stalwart of the sport. Through the annual race, the Flying Stars Cycle Club continues to honour his contribution while creating an opportunity for riders from different generations to compete.
Supporters and cycling fans are being invited to gather along the route and encourage the competitors as they battle for honours over the East Coast roads.
