A prisoner serving a two-year sentence for simple larceny escaped from the New Amsterdam Prison on Monday afternoon while working at a new administrative building, the Guyana Prison Service (GPS) says.
The escapee has been identified as Budnarine Persaud of Lot 101 Bath Settlement, West Coast Berbice.
According to the GPS, Persaud was working with three other prisoners under the supervision of a prison officer when he escaped from lawful custody at approximately 1 pm.
Persaud was scheduled to be released on November 5, 2027.
The Prison Service said an investigation had been launched and that anyone found to have neglected their duties would be held accountable. It is working with the Guyana Police Force to recapture Persaud.
Anyone with information on his whereabouts is asked to contact the nearest police station, the Director of Prisons’ office on 225-6003 or the officer-in-charge of the New Amsterdam Prison on 627-6215.
The GPS warned that harbouring or otherwise assisting an escaped prisoner is a criminal offence.
