The Ministry of Labour and Manpower Planning and the Guyana Prison Service are to collaborate on accredited skills training for inmates, with a view to preparing them for employment.
The announcement followed a visit by Labour and Manpower Planning Minister Keoma Griffith to the Lusignan Prison yesterday. Griffith, accompanied by senior and technical officers from the ministry, inspected the prison’s trade shops, kitchen, bakery and vocational school to examine how its training programmes are conducted.
The visit was facilitated by Officer-in-Charge Seon Charles. Director of Prisons Nicklon Elliot, Acting Assistant Director of Prisons (Administration) Olivia Cox and training coordinator Superintendent Abeide DeChuna also participated.
Griffith spoke with inmates about the rehabilitation opportunities available to them and met prison staff responsible for supervising the programmes. The ministry said the proposed accredited training would be designed to meet labour-market demand. It did not give a start date or identify the qualifications that would be offered.
