The University of Guyana will hold its fourth Graduate Research Symposium from September 30 to October 2, with presentations expected to examine how research across different fields can address climate, health and development challenges.
The School of Graduate Studies and Research said the symposium, themed “Resilience for the 21st Century: Navigating Complexity Through Multidisciplinary and Interdisciplinary Collaboration”, will be held in person at the Ramada Princess Hotel and online, a release from UG said.
Graduate students are expected to present work on subjects including health and systems of care, digital innovation, infrastructure, agriculture, forestry, culture and sustainable development. The programme will also include keynote presentations, panel discussions and competitive three-minute and five-minute research presentations.
Dean of the school Professor Paulette Bynoe said the event gives graduate students an opportunity to present their work locally, particularly when the cost of attending international conferences is beyond their reach. She said the theme was chosen to allow students from across the university’s academic disciplines to take part.
According to Bynoe, issues such as flooding, drought, biodiversity loss and resource management require research that draws on several fields. The school expects about 150 people to attend in person, with more able to participate online.
The university said invitations had also been extended to institutions elsewhere in the Caribbean and Suriname. The symposium is held every two years; the school said the deadline for submissions was July 31.
