Albion estate constable seriously injured in  forklift accident

Where the accident is said to have occurred.

—APNU MP  calls for investigation, questions management’s response

A 23-year-old supernumerary constable attached to the Albion Sugar Estate remained in a serious condition yesterday following a workplace accident on September 22, and APNU MP Vinceroy Jordan has called for an investigation and answers from the Guyana Sugar Corporation (GuySuCo).

The injured man is Latchman Raghoo, of Albion Front, Corentyne, Berbice. Yesterday, GuySuCo issued what appeared to be its first public statement  on the matter.  The Corporation said it had noted with deep concern recent social media statements on the incident involving  Raghoo.

The Corporation said that the incident occurred on Monday, 22 September 2026, at approximately 15:30 hours.

“Contrary to the impression being created in some sections of social media, GuySuCo has not been silent, indifferent, or absent in this matter. Estate Management and the Corporation’s Medical Department have been in daily contact with the family, monitoring Mr. Raghoo’s condition and providing full support.

“The Corporation is extremely disappointed that an incident of this nature, involving the health and wellbeing of an employee, is being misrepresented for public attention. This is a delicate and

deeply personal matter for the injured employee, his family and GuySuCo, and reckless commentary only serves to make an already difficult situation more distressing. It should not be

used to create fear, spread misinformation, or suggest that the Corporation has shown no concern for the welfare of its worker”, the sugar corporation said.

It added that the matter is being reviewed to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident and to identify any additional measures that may be necessary to strengthen safety within the work site.

The Corporation urged all persons to exercise responsibility and sensitivity when speaking on matters involving injured employees and their families. GuySuCo said it deeply regretted the incident and extended sincere concern and best wishes to Raghoo for his full and speedy recovery. The Corporation also assured his family that it will continue to provide support during this difficult period.

According to information reaching Kiskadee Watch, Raghoo developed blood poisoning and was facing the possible amputation of a leg.

In a Facebook post, Jordan said the worker had reportedly been crushed by an electric forklift at the Albion Estate sugar bond and was receiving treatment in an intensive care unit.

Jordan alleged that workers were concerned about what they described as management’s silence and a lack of meaningful support following the accident.

“A worker’s life and wellbeing must never be treated as an afterthought,” Jordan wrote.

He called for an immediate and transparent investigation, including a report on the circumstances of the accident and the measures being taken to protect other workers.

The opposition MP questioned whether proper safety procedures had been followed, whether the area had been secured for the forklift’s operation, and what immediate assistance had been provided to Raghoo and his family. He also asked whether a formal investigation had been launched.

“GuySuCo management owes the injured worker, his family and the workforce answers,” he said.
