Mechanical engineer Davion Mars survived a major scare against Ryan McKay to secure his fifth consecutive victory and maintain his perfect record in the Pegasus Weekly Chess League on Monday evening at the Pegasus Hotel, Kingston, Georgetown.
Mars, who entered the fifth round as the tournament leader and favourite, was forced to recover from a difficult position after McKay threatened to pull off one of the biggest upsets of the competition.
The league resumed on October 12 following a break for the Chess Olympiad, with Mars looking to strengthen his grip on the championship.
However, his aggressive approach nearly proved costly as several early miscalculations left him a pawn down by move 14.
Subsequent computer analysis showed that McKay had gained a significant advantage, with Mars’ position evaluated at approximately minus two.
Despite being under pressure, Mars continued to search for attacking opportunities rather than settle for a defensive approach.
His persistence paid off on move 19 when McKay committed a costly tactical error, allowing Mars to capture a knight through a discovered attack.
The mistake completely changed the direction of the game, with Mars quickly taking control of the encounter. McKay eventually resigned 16 moves later, handing the tournament leader another important victory.
The result moved Mars to a perfect five points from five games, keeping him alone at the top of the standings with just two rounds remaining.
Meanwhile, Keron Sandiford maintained second place on four points after defeating Odinnie Reece, while chess coach Oluwadare Oyeyipo climbed into third place with 3.5 points following his victory over Raymond Sookdeo.
Jaden Taylor was another notable performer in the fifth round, climbing three places to fifth position after defeating Woman Candidate Master Jessica Callender.
With the championship entering its final stages, Mars remains firmly in control of the title race.
However, Sandiford and Oyeyipo remain within striking distance and will be hoping to capitalise on any slip-up by the unbeaten leader.
The sixth round is scheduled for Monday, October 19, at the Pegasus Hotel in Kingston, Georgetown.
The Pegasus Weekly Chess League is presented by Drayton’s Chess Club in partnership with the Pegasus Chess Club and the Guyana Chess Federation.
